Here’s an interesting video on different methods of fortune-telling found today in Taiwan. The bird technique is found all over the world and is sometimes used with tarot or cartomancy decks in which case the bird picks the cards.

Thank you, Mary, this was fascinating! I was intrigued by the use of the birds.
When I was growing up we had that same type of bird as a pet. It was called a white Java temple bird, also known as a java finch or java sparrow.
It was amazing and nostalgic to see the bird choose the card, especially one that looked like my pet–who was a great singer. He was precious–all white with a red beak.
Perhaps he was trying to tell me that one day I might be interested in divination.

Fortune-telling birds! That’s so cool. I used to have a cat who would pick cards for me–if I fanned out the deck she would place her paw on a card and then when I took that card out she’d put her paw on the next card. She did good readings! My current cats don’t care to play that game, so I have to draw my own cards now.
Thanks for sharing this video!
